2014 – Effy Flagship store cruise terminal

The design of the Effy Jewelry flagship store at the cruise terminal is conceived as a monolithic stone volume, subtly carved as if cut by the facets of a diamond. These incisions shape a strong rectangular form while creating generous corner windows and a 30-foot-long showcase carved directly into the mass of the building.

Located in Philipsburg, Sint Maarten, the square lies in line with the pier and perpendicular to the Boardwalk, forming a vital connection between the Boardwalk and Front Street. It functions as both a gateway and a gathering place within the city.

The strategic cuts enhance visibility and establish strong sightlines through the store, an essential feature given its location along a primary pedestrian route from bus transfers to the cruise pier, accommodating heavy passenger flows.

The façade is clad in one-inch-thick natural Jerusalem stone, selected for its robust character, rich color variations, and crystalline texture, lending the building a timeless and solid presence. The exterior pavement is carefully leveled and seamlessly aligned with the interior floor, reinforcing continuity between inside and out. Custom-cut aluminum window profiles frame the openings with precision, further accentuating the carved effect.

Although engineered as a bunker-like structure to withstand hurricane winds and wave impact, the building maintains an open, inviting, and transparent character. This balance between resilience and openness was proven during Hurricane Irma, when the building remained fully intact and dry throughout.
