Walter Plantz Square is a vibrant public space defined by a series of colorful, small-scale buildings that reflect the traditional architecture of Sint Maarten, set within a sleek and contemporary urban design.
Located in Philipsburg, Sint Maarten, the square lies in line with the pier and perpendicular to the Boardwalk, forming a vital connection between the Boardwalk and Front Street. It functions as both a gateway and a gathering place within the city.
Palm trees aligned along both sides of the central axis provide much-needed shade from the Caribbean sun, while the central fountain adds a cooling effect. A rectangular field of white paving marks the fountain’s footprint, from which water jets emerge through flush-mounted pipes. Integrated lighting transforms the fountain into a fairytale-like feature in the evening. Water drains discreetly through narrow recesses between the carefully crafted travertine and Ibiza white marble paving stones, maintaining a clean and seamless surface.
The openness of the buildings blurs the boundary between interior and exterior, allowing the square and the surrounding spaces to merge into one continuous experience.
The eight buildings feature traditional Sint Maarten architectural details, including decorative gingerbread along the eaves and wooden exterior wall finishes such as potdekselen and houten rabat. The vibrant color palette follows local painting traditions, reinforcing the site’s cultural identity.
Designed to withstand hurricanes, intense sunlight, and the corrosive effects of salt air, the buildings incorporate durable materials and carefully considered detailing.
Since its opening in 2015, Walter Plantz Square has welcomed more than one million visitors and has become an integral part of the local community, hosting celebrations, birthdays, and public events. As an anchor investment by Port St Maarten, the project has contributed significantly to the revitalization of the Downtown neighborhood, which has evolved into a safe and welcoming area rich in characteristic colonial monuments.
Many of these monuments, however, remain under threat. This vulnerability formed a key inspiration for the design of the square: a contemporary monument that honors and draws attention to the historic monuments of Sint Maarten.
”a monument for the monuments”
Walter Plantz Square serves as a meeting place for local residents and as a starting point for cruise passengers arriving by water taxi at the nearby pier. As the sun sets, the square comes alive with light, creating an inviting atmosphere and making it an ideal setting for gatherings and events.
