2018 – Cultural Center Philipsburg, Sint Maarten

As part of the post–Hurricane Irma recovery program and with initial support from the World Bank, this project envisions the extension and upgrade of the cultural center in the heart of Philipsburg. Strategically located between Back Street and Cannegieter Street, the renewed center will strengthen urban connectivity while serving as a dynamic cultural landmark.

Designed as a multifunctional venue for theater, music, and the visual arts, the cultural center will combine indoor and outdoor spaces that reflect the diversity and vitality of the arts on Sint Maarten. It will be a place to perform, to meet, to stay, and to remember—anchoring cultural life within the capital.

The project expands performance capacity to international standards, accommodating more than 1,300 visitors across multiple venues. It includes the renovation and expansion of the main theater, new balconies and VIP seating, open-air and rooftop performance spaces, rehearsal areas, and immersive multimedia facilities. Accessibility, efficient logistics, and integrated local artworks are central to the design.

Beyond infrastructure, the redevelopment aims to stimulate youth participation in the creative industries, strengthen the arts as an economic pillar, and act as a catalyst for the revitalization of Philipsburg’s town center.
