2018 – SVOBE – Public Highschool – Post hurricane Irma

Following Hurricane Irma in 2017, the urgent need for resilient and sustainable educational facilities for SVOBE prompted this proposal. The project reconsiders school housing through renewed educational programs, contemporary construction technologies, and an innovative architectural response.

After a detailed technical survey, three buildings were earmarked for renovation, as they were in good structural, MEP, and architectural condition. The remaining structures presented major challenges in terms of structure, installations, and architectural detailing and were therefore slated for demolition.

The site is defined by Walter A. Nisbeth Road, Voges Street, and W.G. Buncamper Road. The building volume engages its urban context by complementing adjacent office structures while establishing an iconic presence at the eastern entrance to the town. The massing is organized around a central green courtyard, forming the spatial and social heart of the school.

The main entrance is structured as a sequence of three zones: a public forecourt with a kiss-and-ride function, a secured landscaped buffer providing natural shading, and an elevated school deck above the parking structure with informal gathering spaces. Vertical greenery and integrated planters contribute to microclimatic comfort and environmental performance.

Classrooms are connected by open-air circulation and small plaza-like spaces on each level. The rooftop accommodates the school restaurant and additional social spaces, extending learning beyond the classroom. The project aims to operate as an eco-neutral facility through water harvesting, greywater recycling, solar energy generation, heat-reflective façades, and a predominantly solid-wood structural system.

The façade is articulated as an abstract, semi-open composition with a strongly vertical and rhythmic pattern. This strategy enhances interior spatial openness while functioning externally as a privacy screen. Distinct color accents subtly identify public and multifunctional spaces such as the auditorium and open learning center.

”Svobe became acquainted with DAM Caribbean in early 2019. DAM Caribbean provided Svobe with an innovative, state-of-the-art design for an academic campus. Since then, Svobe has been pursuing the realization of this project.

Throughout the development of the school proposal, DAM Caribbean demonstrated a highly proactive and committed approach. Their involvement extended well beyond design, engaging constructively with the school’s educational vision, sustainability objectives, and post-hurricane resilience needs.

Their professional dedication, as well as their long-term commitment and engagement, have been of great value to our institution.”
