2019-2021 – The Morgan Resort

Tourism has defined this location on Sint Maarten since the 1960s, with several revitalization phases shaping its development over time. Initial renovation plans for the hotel were developed in 2016, but following the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma in 2017, the project timeline was accelerated.

The original hotel, constructed in the early 2000s, has since been fully renovated and expanded. A final phase, including the spa, was planned for completion in 2022.

The Morgan Resort features an architecturally integrated experience pool. While the island is renowned for its iconic sandy beaches, the hotel is located along a rocky coastline. The design challenge was therefore clear: to create a pool experience that could rival the allure of the island’s beaches.

DAM Caribbean was responsible for the architectural design of the new front extensions, housing the kitchen, spa, and gym, as well as the courtyard and the swimming pool.

This ambition required a departure from conventional swimming pool typologies and a reinterpretation of the beach experience itself. The resulting design transforms the pool into an immersive landscape. Viewed from the hotel, the water appears to extend seamlessly into the Caribbean Sea, creating the illusion that the hotel lobby is floating within it. Gently sloping platforms and a playfully shaped basin enhance this fluid transition, allowing guests to momentarily forget the absence of a sandy shoreline.

The pool features a 70-meter-long infinity edge, visually merging the pool water with the sea beyond.

At the edge of the infinity pool lies a small “island” accommodating a hot tub framed by palm trees. The jacuzzi is accessible via a staircase from within the pool and includes a shallow reclining platform with integrated water features.

A spiraled concrete water slide is seamlessly integrated into the pool’s sculpted form, enclosing the pool area. On the south side, a swim-up bar serves guests both in and out of the water, reinforcing the pool’s role as a social and experiential focal point.
