The master plan was developed in close collaboration with Moffatt & Nichol, coastal engineers https://www.moffattnichol.com/
The aim was to analyze how the expected growth of the cruise can take place, while addressing transportation challenges and identifying development opportunities in and around Philipsburg.
The Great Bay Connector establishes a continuous, pedestrian-friendly waterfront that links the port with Philipsburg’s key destinations. New and expanded promenades, boardwalk extensions, and improved access routes create a vibrant public realm that encourages walking, social interaction, and engagement with the bay. These interventions strengthen the relationship between city and sea while supporting tourism, local businesses, and everyday urban life, connecting the port to the fort.
The Great Bay, Philipsburg & Great Salt Pond
By enhancing key roadways and intersections, the Urban Corridor reduces congestion and improves traffic flow, creating a more legible and efficient movement system through Philipsburg. The Salt Pond Loop forms a strategic mobility ring around the Great Salt Pond, reinforcing connections between neighborhoods, commercial districts, and waterfront areas.
A strengthened Water Taxi network introduces a seamless water-based mobility layer from the airport to Philipsburg. While land based will taxies have more efficient operations and connect the multiple new jetties, and a dedicated water lock at Fresh Pond, they all reduce pressure on road traffic and offer a new experience for residents and visitors.
